About the programme

The song entitled Le Rugiade, dewdrops, gave name to the programme. Drops of dew are a symbol of hope, freshness and youth; it is not far from them to drops of blood, beads of sweat or falling tears. None of this is unknown to a woman with an uneasy life, be it a young girl, the happy mother of young todler, or a mother wittnessing the suffering of her own son.

Iva Bittová

Iva Bittová was born in 1958 in Bruntál in northern Moravia in what was then Czecho­slovakia, nowadays the Czech Republic. She attended drama pre-school, specializing in violin and ballet. In due course she gained admittance to the Music Conservatory in Brno, often called the Czech Republic’s second city. She graduated in drama and music. During her studies, Iva took part-time engagements as an actress and musician in Brno’s Divadlo Husa na provázku (Goose On A String Theater). She cites these engagements as some of the most formative and influential of her life. Around this time she also featured as an actress in radio, TV and movie productions.

After living in the countryside near Brno for 17 years, Iva decided to relocate her personal and professional life to the United States. In the Summer of 2007, she settled amid the splendors of nature in upstate New York.

Iva Bittová went through many musical genres from alternative to jazz, rock, classical music, including opera (as W. A. Mozart’s Donna Elvira). She was always looking for a name for her musical language, which for many is completely original.

The violin became a driving force and important guide for her path through life. While working in the theater, she continued her collaboration with professor Rudolf Šťastný, the primarius of the Moravian Quartet. These private lessons are still taking place. After nearly thirty years of musical career, she found much new inspiration studying at the Academy of Ancient Music of the Institute of Musicology at the Masaryk University in Brno, where she in 2015 received her Bachelor degree. Thanks to the theoretical knowledge and practical lessons in Baroque singing and Baroque violin, she returns to those roots of musical style and repertoire that today is known under the term “old music”. In collaboration with Jan Čižmár she conceived the chamber music programme Se cerca, se dice (violin, singing, theorbo, lute, harpsichord) and with lute accompaniment the programme Le Rugiade.

Jan Čižmář

Jan Čižmář is a versatile performer focusing on historical plucked instruments. He performs regularly in Europe, Asia and the USA with ensembles such as Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Capella Cracoviensis, and under conductors such as Frans Brüggen, Christopher Hogwood, Giovanni Antonini, Yannick Nézet–Séguin and Christina Pluhar. He appears also as soloist with of baroque and renaissance repertoire.

After graduation in guitar and musicology in his native Brno he studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he began playing the lute in the class of Jakob Lindberg. He continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with the teachers Nigel North, Joachim Held, Mike Fentross and Christina Pluhar.

He was the founder and editor of the Czech guitar magazine Kytara and contributes regularly to other musical periodicals. He is also intensely involved with publishing and research activities in the field of early music.

Jan Čižmář taught lute and related instruments at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice in Poland; currently he is teaching at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno and at the Academy of Ancient Music at Masaryk University in Brno. He regularly gives courses and masterclasses in Europe and overseas.
